Silver Gets a Stylish Sheen

A bracelet that doubles up as a ring, an antique-finish necklace that sports old one rupee coins as embellishment, a ring that shimmers in the colours of the rainbow when light falls upon it... it's an Aladdin's cave at Bhima Jewellers, which has introduced a special line in silver jewellery as part of its Silver Festival. The pieces in silver are a mix of retro and trendy designs. While some come in sterling silver, others come blended with different textures and patterns.Says Suhaas Rao, managing director, Bhima Jewellery: "Most jewellers hold festivals celebrating diamonds, gold and platinum; few hold a fete for silver. In fact, I think we must be the first in the city to do so. Most people are under the impression that silver does not come in innovative designs; we wanted to change that misconception. We have sourced silver pieces from master artisans from various corners of India. We also want customers to realise the affordability factor of silver."And so, the fete that is on until October 25 has something for everyone. There are traditional pieces of jewellery such as Rudraksha mala, Sphadikam mala, Thulasi mala... as well as more contemporary pieces that come in antique polish-, oxidised silver -, enamel work- and stone work finish."We have Navaratna stones set in silver rings and pendants," says a salesperson at Bhima.Catching the eye at the display counter are green, white and blue stones set in peacock motifs for necklaces. Also dazzling are zircon set bangles with tiger, snake and dragon designs and dainty necklaces with rainbow-coloured stones. A ball-shaped locket that can store four locket-sized photos makes a gift to remember as does an enamel and zircon-worked 'Alpahabet' pendant.But if you think the exhibition is all about women, well, you are mistaken. The silver collection has a line of jewellery for men and children as well.If men have pendants shaped like a rooster, a skull and that of Lord Ganesha to choose from, children have a selection of pendants and rings inspired by cartoon characters such as Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse and Angry Birds.Chunky bangles for men and dainty bracelets for children are also available.The fete has a range of utensils, idols, and curios in silver too. Those who literally want their kids to grow up with a silver spoon in their mouth can probably feed their kids from a silver bowl with a silver spoon.Aarti sets and small diyas placed in crystal bowls make lovely additions to the pooja room while fruit bowls will surely brighten up the dining table.There is a special promotion in connection with the fete.
